MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - North Greenville University forward Roderick Howell will represent Conference Carolinas and NCAA Division II at the 2019 State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, Intersport announced Wednesday (Apr. 3) afternoon.
Howell, a senior from Rock Hill, S.C., was selected to participate in the Great Clips Slam Dunk Championship after being named the 2019 Dark Horse Dunker. The Dark Horse Dunker competition is a digital media fan-voting contest. After 280,895 fan votes were cast over four weeks, Howell was selected the winner.
"To be blessed with this amazing opportunity is humbling," said Howell. "Before the Dark Horse Dunker competition, I would have never imagined that I would be in Minneapolis partaking in an event in conjunction with the Final Four. This awesome experience is all thanks to the love and support of my loved ones. It is truly a blessing and I am ecstatic!"
During the 2018-19 season, Howell shot 57 percent from the field while averaging 11.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. His 1.5 blocks per game led Conference Carolinas, while his 7.3 rebounds ranked sixth in the league.
"This is a great news for Roderick, North Greenville, Conference Carolinas and Division II," said Assistant Commissioner Sharod Williams. "As a former participant in the Dark Horse Dunker competition, I am elated for Roderick actually winning and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity he has to showcase his talent on a national stage. The entire league is cheering for him!"
The 31st annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships, which will showcase the dunking and long-range shooting talents of 24 of the country's premier college basketball players, will air live on ESPN at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday from Target Center in Minneapolis.
